The new spring weather means abandoning those thick wool hats and letting our hair blow in the breeze. However, even though the weather is mild and the sun doesn't seem very intense, UV rays can still damage our fragile tresses.

For light sun protection, try Sesame Oil. It's perfect for low to moderate sun exposure. Plus, its cheap and easy to find at any grocery store.

Sesame oil has been used for centuries as a natural hair conditioner and sunscreen. It can block up to 30% of the sun's harmful rays and will act as a protective barrier between the unforgiving wind and our fragile strands.

Q: What exactly is oil sheen? I've seen my stylist use it at the salon. Should I pick up a can for home use and what brands do you recommend?

A. Oil sheen is essentially an aerosolized combination of mineral oil and/or petroleum, silicone, (some) natural oils and fragrance. The pump or spray action allows the product to disperse a thin layer of light oil across the hair. It is designed to add sheen and is often used as a finishing spray to polish off a style.

Oil sheen, in my opinion, is perfectly fine for home use, when used in moderation. I would limit usage to one or two quick "sprays" daily as many women find that over usage can lead to dry hair. I would always use a water-based moisturizer first and then follow with a light spray of oil sheen.

Now that winter is over and the wool hats are banished to the storage closet, its about time we let down our buns and enjoy hair that blows in the wind!

Yet, one the common complaints I hear from women is that they can't seem to achieve hair that "swangs", or moves effortlessly, without heading to the beauty salon.

Here are a few tips that have helped me achieve that Victoria's Secret swang at home!

1. Clarify

Once a month, shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, followed by detangling shampoo and/or deep conditioner. Clarifying once a month will help you get rid of any build up that can make your hair look dull and lifeless.

Before commercial hair dyes, people used freshly brewed tea to darken their hair and add long-lasting shine. A black tea rinse is a cheap and easy way to update your look in the comfort of your own kitchen!

Instructions:

1. Boil 2 cups of water.

2. In a non-metal bowl, pour boiling water over 2 tablespoons of black tea and let steep for 20-25 minutes. Overnight is best.

3. Strain to remove tea leaves.

Spring is all about renewal and rebirth so now would be a good time to schedule that deep trim or cut. Adding layer or face framing bangs is also great way to update your look without a drastic cut. Lastly, you might want to try a new semi permanent rinse to experiment with color without the long term commitment.

Spring also brings more opportunities to be outside. People tend to spend more time in the park, at cafes or just walking around enjoying the nice weather. However, you want to be mindful of how the change in weather will affect your hair. Sun, wind and rain can be quite harsh on textured hair.

Here are a few additional tips that have helped me keep my hair healthy during the warmer seasons:

1. Smaller Sections, Better Results!

The key to a flawless style is precision. The devil is in the details. While styling, remember to always make precise parts and take small sections. Try to make sure that the same amount of hair is on each roller or that you are always blowdrying/flat ironing the hair in small sections.

2. Avoid Being Cool!

Before removing rollers, twists or braids, always make sure the hair is 100% dry. Look for any parts of the hair that feel "cool" to the touch.

Here's a quick and easy way to keep your hair smelling fresh and fragrant each day.

Take 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender, tea tree, etc.) and apply it to your paddle brush or boar bristle brush. Brush hair to freshen.

Or, add 1-2 drops to a full water bottle or liquid leave-in conditioner and spray directly onto the hair.

Essential oils not only have a potent long lasting aroma, they also act as a mild cleansing agent on the hair shaft.

Make sure to only use one or two drops. Avoid applying directly to the scalp or using your hands to apply as essential oils are extremely concentrated and can irritate the skin.
