As one of the greatest voices of our time, Ms. Erykah Badu has impacted both music and style in a way most artists wish they could. While the level of her talent has remained the same over time, her hair certainly has not. Here, we take a look back at the many looks of this unorthodox diva.
Hair Transformation: Erykah Badu
Badu used the 1998 American Music Awards to channel her inner goddess. She wears a bright green head wrap that both keeps her locks from invading her face and gives a nod to our ancestors. After she popularized this look, it was almost impossible to walk the streets without seeing someone don a variation of this style.

Erykah lets her lovely locks hang out at the 2000 Essence Awards. She keeps them looking breezy and casual by topping them off with a straw hat and white dress reminiscent of a summer day.

In a bold move in 2001, the sultry singer takes it all off. The low-cut hair not only makes life a little easier, but it shows us just how beautiful she really is.
Hair Transformation: Erykah Badu
Keeping us on our toes, Badu changes her look completely in just one short year. She strutted the red carpet at the 2002 Grammy Awards with long extensions. She adds a little green at the end, reminding us that she always thinks outside the box.

The ever-changing lady goes the opposite of bald at the 2003 Grammy Awards. This hairstyle is an exact match to her personality: big!
Hair Transformation: Erykah Badu
Just when we were getting used to the big hair, Erykah takes us in a very different direction. Just months after she rocked the afro, she goes back to short in June 2003 at the BET Awards.

Our favorite chameleon hits us with an unexpectedly tame look in 2006. She skips the big hair and goes for a smoothed-out and understated curl. This sleek look is definitely one we could get used to.
Hair Transformation: Erykah Badu
Erykah shows us who the real Queen of Hairstyles is with this crazy style. She tops simple braids with what appears to be pantyhose full of hair at a 2006 performance.
Hair Transformation: Erykah Badu
Always keeping us on our toes, Erykah wears an interesting look at a 2007 concert in the Netherlands. Not quite straight, but not quite natural, she wows us with a style that's definitely different.

Badu goes for a sassy blowout in 2008. The glasses and the t-shirt take the look from modest secretary to laid-back trendsetter.

To call mutilating one's natural black hair with white wigs, straighteners, and chemicals a "hairstyle" is repulsive...this is black self-hatred...to call it anything else is ignorant.

Because a black woman wants to change her hair is black self-hatred???? She's expressing herself the way she wants to. She's still a beautiful black woman. The only ignorant remark here is yours.

All black women hates her own hair and will hotcomb the hell out of her head or use that stinky chemicals to achieve a fake phoney white look hair doo, Or white look wig it or that funny looking weave with 2 textures of hair showing looking like BOZO the clown, Black women is not "pretty" till she practice her holloween white look on a everyday basis. Leave the white look to the white women, Find your own idenitity, practice a natural ... that straight hair doo don't fit your texture and facial features. I walked up behind a BIG BUTT white girl looked her in the face and she was black WTF!

As with anything else I think it's wrong to criticize someone just because they want to straighten or color their hair. Most people who talk about a person should wear their hair "natural" don't have any hair.
There are many of us African American women who have a lot of hair who are very tender headed and it's easier to wear it straight. So basically, I'm saying you deal with your hair (if you have any) and let others deal with theirs the way they see fit.

@lillymc...Its ok to use the chemicals to loosen the tight curls to make it managable. Your talking about a small minority of black women with that issue, I'm talking about them black girls that white people are laughing at when she copys white girls hair doo to be "pretty" You don't know me so your guess about my hair is wrong, I have a true natural I don't comb my hair I let my hair curl and do its own thing and I look good can't keep women white and black out of my hair. Black women look better with curl and look phoney with straight no life dead white look hair doo. Excuses don't help the little girls of color looking for role models Serena Williams under a blond wig?! thats ghetto and she looks fake like BOZO the clown. If you keep fukin with your hair you will end up going bald around the ears like Naomi Cambell. Its time for black women to embrace her true idenitity. You will be aright I know you feel touched by peoples opinions. But the truth hurts. You trying to say All black wommen have bad hair issues so they use that stinking chemicals and that ghetto hot hot hotcomb? I think not...Maby you are bald and have tender scalp because of that smelly chemicals and burning the hell out of your scalp with that black burnt hotcomb. Women of color look better with some curl!
