Beauty culture now is embracing hair textures that create height and extensive volume.
Sarah James, editor of popular hair blog Hair Thursday, said many women are creating a variety of hair textures. "Natural waves, pin curls, kinky curls and frizz are just a few of the ways stylists are stepping away from smooth and straight," James said.
Fashion designers such as Mulberry have embraced crimped waves and frizzy blowouts in their runway shows and ad campaigns. Mulberry's Spring 2011 ads feature redheaded models in blunt-cut bobs in angular shapes. Their poufy strands help to fill out the V-like shapes.
The shift in images seen in magazines and red carpets are innovative, but there is a slight irony in the change. Black women often work hard for their sleek tresses to emulate the popular beauty trends, but the latest styles are curiously similar to black women's au natural.
Although some black women like to play it safe with relaxed hair and straight extensions, the 'going natural' crusade may have influenced the frizzy trend.

"I think now that there are more products for curly hair, people aren't as afraid of [textured hair]," said Reed, owner of Noire Salon in Silver Spring, MD.
Black women can simply blow-dry and go or braid their hair overnight and shape in the morning, but it takes a little more work for the fashion models.
Women with finer hair types use texture irons such as crimpers and wave irons to achieve the look. Reed said the hairstyle can be achieved by crimp ironing the entire hair, then teasing the hair into shapes for an uncontrolled look.
Luckily, the mundane fashion zombies are breaking out of their conventional ways by expanding their concepts of hair. This is the perfect time for all women to try new styles.
It's daring and defying to the beauty world, but for black women it's a basic wash 'n' go or quick blowout, seen on some of your favorite natural hair blogs.
What do you think of mainstream fashion adopting our kinky look?

*sigh*
Hasn't kinky hair ALWAYS been considered high fashion? Something so "CRAZY, WILD or FIERCE" that it's accepted on the catwalk?
I'm bored now-->

Someone should tell Michelle! As a people, we have much to be ashamed of - the disproportionate number of Black men in prison, the debasement of our women, the Yo-mother-f**ker language employed by our youth and now the burden of Mrs. Obama as First Lady. From her stereo-typical planting of a "truck" garden at the White House to her ape-like mimicking of white hair style and fashion, she is a mixed message of what it means to be Black in America today.
It is no wonder that all too many of our people - if not most of us - feel inherently inferior to white people.
If we cannot clean up our cultural icons in crime-rejectin versus injection, "ho" bashing rap music, role model ministers, and even first ladies, we cannot advance nor expect truly deserved equality with our white fellow citizens.

Your white ass can't fool anybody. Mrs. Obama is very intelligent, powerful & beautiful. She is more that capable of defining herself. Gone are the days that white people determine who, how, what, where we are. You should be talking to your peers about filling lips, tanning and braiding their hair.
BTW- that bulls... about blacks feeling inferior to white probably something you hear on tv. Truth be told, I have out scored and excelled beyond many of you. Catch up!

You sound so fake. Anyone would know that you are not Black. I am a Black male, educated, good-looking and very intelligent. I love First Lady Obama and all that she stands for. She is a beautiful Black woman (Being a Black male, I know my beautiful Black women. I am very proud of her and her accomplishments. I want the world to know that I am a lifter of all Black women, no matter what state of life they are in.
I'm sure that I am not the only Black male who feels this way. Just in case you are Black, you are very unintelligent, blind, inferior (on your own) and you must be having a very hard time in life. As Black people, we are headed to the top. There will be many more Black First Ladies, millionaries, billionaires, pastors, teachers, lawyers, doctors, and you name it! Many of our young people are being educated. Do something for yourself. Many of us have it togerher and are getting stonger!!!!!

I think that fashion designers have been poofing out models hair for years. High fashion shows and magazines are about the only time I ever see non-Black women with big textured hair. In mainstream modeling though the hair has been bone straight. So I hope that these looks make their way into the mainstream and we get away from all the straighteners because everyone has the same boring hair!

"Ape-like mimicking?" LOL... First of all, NO person of color would EVER write this. This was obviously written by some white hater trying to pretend to be black... Say what you want, she's better than previous first wives, and classier too.
