Being the younger sister of one of the world's biggest stars cannot be easy, but Solange Knowles has learned to do it with grace. By singing, songwriting, DJing and constantly changing her indie look, she has managed to step from out of her sister's shadow and become a woman all her own. Let's take a look at this superstar mom's history of hairstyles.
Solange Hair Transformation
Things definitely come full circle. Similar to the style she's wearing now, back in 2001 Solange wore two-toned extensions to the 7th Annual Lady of Soul Awards.
In sticking with the braid theme, Solange goes beach chic at the 2002 Billboard Music Awards. She adds a deep auburn shade to her now longer, wavier hair.
A year later, Solange takes her hair in a completely different direction. She adds a lot of length to her now - bone - straight hair. In addition, she goes for chocolatey brown - almost black - color to walk the red carpet at the 2003 BET Awards.
The singer adds body to her ever-lengthening locks by giving it the barrel curl treatment to celebrate her starring role in "Johnson Family Vacation". The addition of a light bang keeps her hair soft, yet mature, at the movie's premiere in 2004.
Reminding us never to get comfortable with her style, this chameleon takes us in a completely different direction just a year later. Her formerly dark hair gets a serious lightening treatment for her gig as a presenter at the 2005 World Music Awards.
The new mommy shows us just how sexy maturing can be. To make her now more hectic life a little easier, she pulls her brown highlighted hair away from her face. The heavy side-swept bang keeps her looking more like an adult with son Julez at a ceremony to honor Destiny's Child on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.
Not one to give up a good thing, Solange tries her hand at black gain, but this time going for a sultry jet black. Her bright red lipstick sets off the old Marilyn Monroe Hollywood look at her 21st birthday party in 2007.
Going back to what looks like her more natural color, Solange gives us a new silhouette with these tight curls. She keeps it soft while creating a triangular shape at the Verizon Wireless and People Grammy Party in 2008.
The singer accessorizes her ever-changing hair with...hair! By adding a braided wreath to her subtlety-coiffed 'do, she adds texture to her silky mane while guest starring at a 2009 Estelle concert.
Making her debut as one of the faces of Samantha Thavasa in August 2009, Solange completely edges up her look and dares to be different by making the choice to shave her head. Not satisfied with keeping it simple, she adds a side part to make sure we know this bold choice of hairstyle was very much intentional.

We love the natural look on women of color. Not that fake white straight hair look. Women of color look better with some curl.
