'Sesame Street' has aired a new song, 'I Love My Hair,' aimed at young black girls to teach them to value and love their natural hair. The character dances and sings in every hairstyle imaginable, from a small Afro to ponytails to cornrows to twists. This is an important lesson for black girls to learn because even if they come from a household where natural hair is celebrated, like I did, they will no doubt get the "lesson" from the outside world that straight and silky is better.

You have to start it with the kids, that BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL! EMBRACE YOUR ROOTS! BE PROUD OF YOUR BLACKNESS! We need programs and TV Networks like this. But you know what, it starts at HOME! Parents need to INSPIRE & ENCOURAGE their children to EMBRACE THEIR NATURAL BEAUTIFUL HAIR!

just because women have their hair straight doesnt mean they have issues or arent so called proud of who and or what they are.....having your hair the natural or straight... its not that big of a deal....

you are right however just today i noticed a little girl who was about 6 years old w. synthetic thick braids- tight in her head to me that is just sheer laziness when we can not do our daughter's hair and bond with them and help them learn and appreciate their own hair, instead of living in shame finding ways to cover it until the age of 13 where we then give them the deadly rite of passage (if they wait that long)and PERM/ chemically alter and destroy the good thing God started.
