Shampoos, conditioners, and styling products are important parts of hair care...but it doesn't stop there, especially for black women who are serious about taking excellent care of their hair. If you're truly dedicated to taking your haircare game to the next level you need to think about the fabrics you use on your hair, and these specific hair care needs. Let me put you up on game!

I personally prefer to sleep on a silk pillowcase, because I can't keep a head-wrap on at night to save my life. There are said to be multiple benefits of sleeping on silk. According to a Stylelist article, sleeping on silk pillowcases can help to "prevent sleep wrinkles" and stave off further effects of aging. And the slippery soft surface of silk is supremely gentle on your hair. The Branche Charmeuse Case ($75, branchebeautysleep.com) is my favorite -- since I started sleeping on it, I've noticed my hair is less matted when I wake up, and my hair even looks shinier. General prices for 100% silk begin at $40.

When you get out of the shower, you might want to reconsider using a regular terrycloth towel on your tresses. If you wear your hair natural, or have curly hair, regular towels can make your hair frizzy. The Curl-ease ($19.99, curlease.com) is ultra thin, but ultra absorbent. Use it to blot the water out of your hair after washing it, and you'll see your curls are frizz free.

If you want to wrap your hair up post shower and live the lounging life like Joan Collins, then I highly recommend the Wrapadoo ($70, wrapadoo.com). It's a super soft towel that wraps over your head, to keep your wet hair wrapped up and tangle free post-shower. And it comes in different colored cheetah patterns, skulls and bows, and classic colors like turquoise and powder pink.
Do you sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or wrap your head with a scarf at night? Do you have a special hair towel? Share!

I'm a fan of satin pillowcases (leopard print!) but thank you for the facts also about the type of towels to use on my curls. Hate to put so much work and $ into the products to mess up the results with a bad towel. Love your writing!

An even cheaper way to save your hair is by wrapping your hair around your head or pony tail it and wear a $2 to $3 du-rag. This article is just an endorsement (commercial) for these high-behind products mentioned. Umph, umph, umph, ya'll don't be fooled.

I see lots of advice about what to do for natural hair. But when I was growing up, it was called "nappy" or "bad" hair. My mom's solution was to perm it. But that would make my hair grow a certain length then break off, no matter how well I took care of it. Now I wear my hair "natural" and put extensions in it and wear it twisted. But I do that because #1, I really hate taking the time in the morning to do my hair and #2, it's an easy way to take care of my hair and #3 with my "nappy" I can't find a product to make it look decent enough to wear it out on its own. My hair is also thick and in order to even comb it I have to run a straightening comb through it and I do not like heat that close to my head. The heat causes my hair to frizz or "draw" up tight. So what product can I use to keep it stretched out and manageble?

@Janice.
no need to use heat on your hair..vegetable glycerin is very good for the hair keeping it well moisturizes .just spray it on hair every morning or two and when you wear an afro and go out the hair will get bigger as the day go on...you can also band sections of your hair(ouchless bands) at night which will keep the hair stretched for styling in the morning..

I just tried Miss Jessies curl merngue and I just order a gift basket ot he netire line. I did my on Coil-out and for someone whose never styled their own natural hair b4 (other than to cornrow it and hide it under a wig) I'm quite happy. It looses and defines natural curl.

Ladies save your money..
All you need to keep hair from falling out or snagging is to by a $1 SILK SCARF AND WRAP IT AROUND YOUR HEAD OR PILLOWCASE BEFORE SLEEPING AND WHEN YOU GET OUT THE SHOWER IMMEDIATELY WRAP YOUR HEAD WITH A WHITE TEE SHIRT..THATS ALL PLAIN AND SIMPLE...SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!

Question ladies. My hair has recently started breaking off on one side near the scalp/hair line. It appears that the beautician left the perm on a bit too long. It is trying to grow back however, I wanted to know what kind of conditioner/shampoo/treatments and etc i could use on it to help it to continue to grow and be healthy. Also any advice on shedding? Thank you

I have been "natural" for over a year after many, many years of chemical abuse to my hair, and I have never felt this free in my 50 plus years. I can now see that after years of being told by my Mom how "bad" my hair was, the real truth was that she really didn't have a clue.
I love my nappy,tightly curled,kinky hair. It does need care (sulfate-free shampoon,leave in deep conditioner and a silk scarf to use at bed time), but with the right prodcuts natural hair is truly beautiful

You can try sleeping on silk, It really does help, skin & keeping hairstyles fresh.
Personally I buy from "Essence of Silk" because they have the best prices & they have hair wraps too.
