Just about every product on the market makes the same promise to deliver stronger, healthy hair. But what most scientists know, is the whole premise is based on a myth. Because your hair is actually dead.
Don't believe me? Believe the Beauty Brains. In a post titled What Does Your Hair Really Need? they break the whole thing down for laypeople like you and me.
"It's a common misconception that hair can be healthy. Hair can be no more healthy than a shoe lace, a cotton blouse, or any other non-living fiber. The hair on your head is not living tissue. It is dead, keratinized protein. Hair cannot be healthy. Of course, it can look healthy or not-healthy, but that's not the same thing."
Yes indeed, just like the top layer of our skin and our fingernails, hair is made up of dead cells. So why are there so many products out there promising to improve the health of your hair? Because the marketing geniuses know that we're quick to buy into this myth, in the hopes of improving our appearance.
Just because your hair can't actually BE "healthy" doesn't mean it can't grow to be long, strong, and beautiful. The Beauty Brains post underscores the importance of a good, balanced diet as leading to healthy looking hair. Drinking those eight glasses of water a day certainly helps, and it's best to refrain from damaging chemicals, heat and restrictive hairstyles. Protective styles like a simple bun or two strand twists are great for maintaining the length and strength of hair.
In terms of diet, protein is highly recommended for healthy living in general -- vegetarian friends, please don't think I'm exclusively referring to meat! You can get amazing protein from beans, tofu, peanut butter, tempeh, seitan... many delicious sources. Check out this article from the Today Show for suggestions on eating healthier, to improve the appearance of your hair.

Thanks for the article. Nutrition is so important. There are many boards where black women discuss nutrition and supplements for hair growth, but this is not an overnight fix. It takes 2-3 months to see the results, if you can stick with it.

Yes! & many women don't realize the importance of drinking lots of water DAILY-not just when you feel thirsty, but also when you dont. Daily water intake works wonders on the hair but it is a process

I disagree with this article. Maybe it's semantics but I believe that Long, Strong and Beautiful hair equates to it being healthy hair. Therefore, I believe that we do have healthy hair. I also believe that our hair is alive and not dead. I feel that if it were dead, it wouldn't grow. But our hair grows and when it does it grows to be strong, long and beautiful...healthy and alive in my opinion.

I would also like to add that I DO agree that water, protein, and an over-all healthy diet greatly contributes to long, strong and beautiful...healthy hair.

Your hair only "grows" out from the folicle. Anything past that point is DEAD, and does NOT grow. We've all been conditioned (no pun intended) to think of hair as an active, growing thing - it is not. The only way to achieve the most attractive hair possible for YOU is to eat well and take care of the hair that has grown out of those folicles. A person with bad genetics (sorry, is there another way to say it? How about, "People who weren't blessed with the hair genes!"?) may only have thin, lifeless looking hair that comes out of those folicles regardless of how well they eat, condition, and take care of the dead stuff growing out of their folicles. No amount of conditioner, supplements, vitamins, or hundred dollar shampoo can fix THAT.

the roots of your hair are alive which is why it grows. the hair already grown out is dead as a doornail......ask any salon and they will tell you the same thing. Diet/water/getting regular trims keeps your hair healthy >>>>>>>>>but bottom line and again I suggest you ask any salon professional that your grown out hair is very much dead dead dead............
