Thanks to one of my favorite hair blogs, Black Girl With Long Hair -- I caught wind of this story.
Check it. A black woman in Chicago used a drugstore relaxer that caused her hair to "come sliding off my head."
Peep the video, via World Star Hip Hop.
Having watched that, I have more questions than answers.
1. Hair relaxer by nature is a harsh chemical treatment. But... Sheenique?? Has anyone heard of this brand before? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
2. How long was she wearing the product for? Just 10 minutes? Really? In my experience, people will tell you to just "grin and bear it" while getting relaxed, with the belief that keeping the product in for longer will lead to straighter hair. So that makes me wonder. If that's the result after 10 minutes, imagine if she'd left it in for the whole duration. Yikes!
3. So now thanks to the news report, she'll get to meet the president of the company. And what has she learned from this experience? Will she continue to use hair relaxer, or will she seek other ways to style her hair from here on out?
I'm sure you've got an opinion on this -- what are your views on this video?

There are so many reasons that could've played into this happening; as a hairdresser, I would wager a guess that she either 1) left it on too long, hoping for straighter results or 2) used two boxes in close succession (anything less than 2 weeks) or 3) used certain at-home haircolor containing metallic dyes (will break, melt, or smoke when combined with relaxer) Being on strong antibiotics can also cause damage like that. That is why it's important to see a professional. A good hairstylist should be asking you questions about what's going on with your lifestyle, and what actions you've taken with your hair to avoid situations like these, even if it means turning down a client for a service that day.

I hate to say it, but DUH! First of all, it has nothing to do with who put the relaxer in her head or what the brand was. It is a chemical that is dangerous, period. I mean, the stuff can cause blindness for goodness sake. Maybe now she will realize that it's no good and start to appreciate her natural beauty. Hopefully others will follow so this kind of stuff doesnt keep happening. We want to blame everybody and everything else, but the fault is our own. JUST BE

I feel bad for her and I'm trying hard not to be judgemental, but like the Author wrote...Sheenique. I never heard of it. My hair is important to me, my stylist does it at her house, but either I use a no -lye (when I scratched to damn much) or Silky Elements or Proclaim. There are so many other person on the market, motions, dark and lovely, hell "Just for me" I would have never trusted my hair to a no -name relaxer. I hope it grows back.

I disagree about that this relaxer has been around for two years so it is her fault because she did not know what she was doing. I have use a $5.00 relaxer and my hair has not come out. She should be a woman and just tell the truth.

We women should go to the beauty shop because it better to let them do our hair. Because we messy up our hair when we do it,and then when we do that we blame it on the stylist for our careless doing. But i have use all kinds of relaxers and my hair has not come out.

As a professioal stylist I do not recomend anyone do their own relaxers. anytime you buy a drugstore product you are taking a chance. you never know how long that product has been sitting on the shelf whether its been months or years. You also run the risk of overlapping product causing damage and breakage. This woman may have colored her hair prior to application. Or she may have been wearing a texturizer which consists of ingrediants that would react with chemicals in the relaxer. she could have worn braids and the day she took them out applied the relaxer not giving the hair down time deep conditioners etc etc. it could have been a number of reasons why this happened to her. Including allergy to the product. That is why you should never let anyone un trained near you head.

this woman is not lying, bescause i used the same relaxer, and my hair came out identical to hers. i've done my hair for years. never had a problem until i used sheenique. and when i saw this. my kids thought it was me, on that picture. i only let my relaxer stay in about six minutes if i can take it. it's true it's a bad relaxer, it sounds good when you read it.
