Thanks to one of my favorite hair blogs, Black Girl With Long Hair -- I caught wind of this story.
Check it. A black woman in Chicago used a drugstore relaxer that caused her hair to "come sliding off my head."
Peep the video, via World Star Hip Hop.
Having watched that, I have more questions than answers.
1. Hair relaxer by nature is a harsh chemical treatment. But... Sheenique?? Has anyone heard of this brand before? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
2. How long was she wearing the product for? Just 10 minutes? Really? In my experience, people will tell you to just "grin and bear it" while getting relaxed, with the belief that keeping the product in for longer will lead to straighter hair. So that makes me wonder. If that's the result after 10 minutes, imagine if she'd left it in for the whole duration. Yikes!
3. So now thanks to the news report, she'll get to meet the president of the company. And what has she learned from this experience? Will she continue to use hair relaxer, or will she seek other ways to style her hair from here on out?
I'm sure you've got an opinion on this -- what are your views on this video?

She should never, EVER put another relaxer in her hair. No permanent color, no flat iron, no weave, NOTHING. Hopefully her hair will grow back and she could wear a mini fro.

i feel sorry for her. i mean it is sometimes very dangerous if you dont know what you are doing. me and my 14 yr old daughter have been using perms for awhile now.i have thinner hair than my child and somewhat good. just around the edges it gets a little kinky. my daughter has beautiful hair ,but its very thick. i however know not to leave in a perm for more than 20 mins.! i mean as soon as i feel the slightest feeling of a burning sensation,i immediatly rinse it out!!! i never have heard of the perm she used. i currently use OLIVE OIL perm. its one of the most expensive drug store perms, but its so worth it!!!

What do you mean by saying "good"? I thought that healthy hair was good. I hope you're not saying what I think that you saying!

You get what you pay for, wat does she expect for a $5 perm!!!!!!! And by a brand no one has ever heard of??? This is why people should stick with well known companies when it comes to something important like your hair...

Incidents like this are exactly why I do NOT apply chemicals to my hair. I leave the chemicals - color and relaxers - to trained professionals. In addition, there is no way in hell that I am going to apply some $5 product that I have never heard of to my hair. You get what you pay for. It is more cost effective to pay a professional to put a perm in right than to pay one to nurse your fried hair back to life.

My daughter have very thick and long hair and I have put a $5.00 perm to a $30.00 perm on her hair and her hair came out just fine. It not the perm it is the hair and who is perming the hair. I don't think that she knew what she was doing? Her hair may have been too thin for a perm. Perms don't mess up your hair people putting perms on hair mess up the hair!

I wish people would stop calling it a perm, it's a relaxer, and yes you do get what you pay for, That's why they have beauty salons, professionals that can give you a strand test before the relaxer is given. I personally think she may have not used a neutralizer shampoo or had another service or chemical on her hair prior to this travesty taken place.

That why people should go to the beauty shop because they mess up their hair and then blame it on they product. But i have heard of the product before but i never use it .
