What would you do for straight hair?
Some of us use chemicals or heat. Some of us buy hair and have it sewn or glued onto our heads. And soon, there may be yet another option for those who desire the straight look.
From The Daily Mail:
"Researchers in Australia identified the trichohyalin gene as being mainly responsible for creating curls. Although it was known to play a role in the development of the hair follicle, Queensland Institute of Medical Research scientists have discovered its role in curliness.
Professor Nick Martin, author of the research, said a variation in the gene determined the straightness or curliness of hair. Professor Martin said it may be possible to come up with treatments to make hair straighter rather than relying on heated hair straighteners.
He said: 'Potentially we can now develop new treatments to make hair curlier or straighter, rather than treating the hair directly."
That is straight outta the Jetsons, am I right?
But the advent of a possible straight hair pill also raises all kinds of questions, some of which are addressed by the Black Snob:
"I don't even want to know what the side-effects of this puppy would be. I have a fear of going bald and if ANYTHING sounds like it could make you bald a pill that makes your curly hair straight sounds like one. But what's fascinating (and sad, kinda) to me, is that if this pill is created and works with side effects someone can live with (like say, dry mouth), how long do you think before black beauty salons across the nation would be closing up shop? The perm is the bread-n-butter of most beauticians. You can charge tons for it and you get that repeat customer business coming back every four-to-six weeks. If you customer can just pop and pill and get the straight hair she's always dreamed of won't she just drop you? Folks HATE going to the beauty shop anyway. It takes FOREVER. Your appointment is almost never the time you actually make it. This could be potentially devastation. I'm talking a beauty shop apocalypse!"
Valid point -- in a world where you can alter the texture of your hair by taking a pill, where does that leave the hair relaxer industry? What are the potential side effects of this medical breakthrough?
So inquiring minds want to know -- would YOU take a hair straightening pill? What potential side effects could possibly keep you away? How do you feel about this development in the beauty field?

You black people are so insecure.......the black people on here are an embarrassment to the few black people who have accepted their race. When you spout off like that, it just shows how trashy you are. We like to tan, not be black.

i truly feel that as women we always percieve the opposite as more attractive. i have stick straight blonde hair & have always wanted the black curls that other women have.
so sure, i would try the pill, although i do not want to see the hair-care industry suffer.
besides, i just may need them if i achieve that texture & have no clue how to rock it!

Honestly, a pill sounds safer than putting chemicals that can burn your scalp, are dangerous to inhale, ingest, etc. However, women will flock to try it.
I would like anyone that relaxes their hair to explain why they do it, if it's not to have that long silky European look. You can;t tell me there is no other reason why, even if you lie to yourself about it. My mom first permed my hair when I was 11. I had no say in the matter. I'm natural now, but most of my life I had been relaxing my hair. I've always admired natural hair, but I never knew how to go about having my hair natural. I've just always known to perm my hair, and that nappy hair wasn't good. I don't care what any black woman says it is an underlying form of self hate whether you realize it or not or want to admit to it.
I love my natural hair and I am so glad I went natural. I will never straighten it again. What is the crime in wearing you hair the way it grows out of your head??
Even women of other races do things to achieve that European look like dying their hair blonde!

@roxx67 it is a European ideal because they are the ones that instilled this into our brains. They were the ones that told us our kinky hair and dark skin was ugly. Not Asians or Hispanics. Oh and mind you there are Latinos that are Black with "nappy" hair. And all we have done is pass it on from generation to generation.

Hair, it's a topic every girl can talk about! I think hair is just one of those that can have such a big impact on our appearance, without being so invasive. Let's face it, we all have insecurites, and changing our hair could be the one thing that we have control over in our lives (well, to a certain extent). Science pushes that extent as it likes to push that boundary of control our bodies. But how much is too much? This straight hair pill sounds quite interesting. Science, as terrific as it can be, can create so much conflict sometimes. Taking this pill, would it reconfigure your genetic makeup?

You know it amazesme how passively the writer of this peace presents it. When folks talked about finding medical solutions to "correcting" gay behavior, people raised holy hell. Cited the very thought to be a crime against humanity since it presented gay as being wrong and all that is strait as being right. Where is the same outrage for this pill? They have made a pill to "correct" our hair, make "right" and obvious wrong. How dare they! This is disgusting, purely disgusting.
Oh and not a soul try to give me that well it didn't say specifically black women, there are other groups of people with "curly hair too" Yea, that might be so, but I bet you no other group spends money to the tunes of black in the never ending quest for "strait hair". Black folks know it, Asian know it, and like the Asian, white not too will feed on our community getting rich off the insecurities of the black woman.

Well, I think that all of the fuss is really all about salons losing business as mentioned in the article. I am also tiered of being in the salon all day and my appointment not starting on time, or constantly being told by my stylist that my hair has breakage or I have split ends or my hair is overly dry. The stylist complains about my hair’s condition, but never offers any products to help. I decided to relax my hair because I COULD NOT GET A COMB THROUGH IT! I love being black, but I did not love ripping my hair out by the roots just to comb it. If all this is really just about a pill, then just don’t take it. If this is about salons loosing money, then beauticians should treat their clients with the respect that a person deserves WHO IS PAYING THEM GOOD MONEY FOR THEIR SERVICES.
