Some think the film was great and learned much about black hair products and "enhancements" while others think Rock took a complex and fraught issue and made a big joke of it and black women while he was at it.
The comments on our 'Good Hair' stories were varied:Amala on 10/11/2009 was not feeling the film:
Talk about sterotypes ... what you will get from the movie: all black women wear weaves, all black women perm their hair, and all black women are high maintenance; and black men have no greater desire than to run their hands through your hair. What a crock of BS. I saw the movie yesterday and I can say that Chris Rock is in it to make money and that's it.
Don't go to this movie expecting some kind of analysis about how the society doesn't except black hair as it is therefore, black women don't except their hair ... so they conform. There is nothing about how natural hair is on the rise; that natural hair salons and locticians are in abundance. It simply a comedy that will make money for Chris Rock at the expense of black women.
I've expereienced every style under the sun both good and bad, but now after years of experimenting sport a natural look because it's best for me. When Rock made this movie I don't think his goal was not to explore the stigmas or intricacies of the African-American experience as it relates to hair it was strictly for entertainment value only. He's a comedian, so why would expect something so deep?
'Good Hair' opened in select cities on Friday, Oct. 7 and is scheduled to go wide on Oct. 23. What are your thoughts?

BLACK PEOPLE! Be real with yourselves. Black people, women in particular tend to have a kinkier, thicker, coarser type of hair. It is what it is. We do not need to be ashamed, or feel that our "secret" is out. Whatever you do to your hair, rock it with confidence. If you can get up in the morning and live you best life with a full head weave, then do it. If you prefer to rock an afro, do it. But do it with PRIDE and self-assurance. Us straightnening our hair or putting tracks in it is not a sign of weakness or humility, it is us enhancing our beauty. Stop feeling like the joke is on us now that a comedian showed us in a REAL light. EVERY woman does something to enhance

Okay Princess I think you're missing my point. What I dig are beautiful women and I'd prefer nothing more than to have a Sista. However, you know I don't hear white women giving tired excuses saying "because Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Aniston look good only because they're celebrities or because they're rich and have personal trainers". No! They take care of themselves despite that fact and they work hard on looking good. I mean how did we as a people get to this place where we've lowered our standards and have settled for that which is not worthy and this applies to both genders? Why is it that women prefer the bad boys and why should us Brothas have to settle for a Burger Queen with a bunch of kids? It's frustrating trying to find a Sista that is career orientated, fit, and without a bunch of kids. Is that too much to ask for? I mean I wouldn't blame a Sista for wanting the same thing. Really, should I have to compromise because trying to find a Sista that has the aforementioned is like trying to find a needle in a haystack? Or tell me am I just wrong because I rebuke "voluptuous" Sistas? Maybe Sista''s should spend more time treating themselves as "queens" rather than they do on mealtime? And to think my original post offended you!? As an analogy, what if I cooked you a gourmet meal of all of your favorite things to perfection and then I served you this beautiful and most glorious meal on a dirty stinky trashcan lid followed by me telling you "Bon Appetit". Truth of the matter is looks matter. If they didn't Chris Rock wouldn't have made a film about vanity. Presentation accounts for a lot. You wouldn't eat my meal anymore than nobody wants someone that doesn't take care of themselves or has nothing good going for them. Whoever told you it's only the inside that counts told you a lie. I love black women my mother, my sisters, my aunts, etc. are all beautiful black women. But whatever good catches that are out there are not just coveted by black men but all men and I no problem with that but I do have a problem with so very few. Tell me how in the world can you be upset with what I've said when I'm being honest? Would you rather me protect your feelings and lie to you and let nothing get resolved? I would've hoped we had all reached a level of maturity to be candid with one another. Look Princess don't presume that I want a white woman. I do like them but I'd much rather have a Sista. Close

Not upset, no not at all. Just disappointed in your comment. Can men like you be a little SENSITIVE, more CARING, UNDERSTANDING,and SUPPORTIVE for black woman for once?
