Hair Trends at New York Fashion Week

Wowza, this last week has been a whirlwind. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York isn't over yet, but my time in the Big Apple has come to an end. Your Afrobella is exhausted from the fabulousity! But happy to recount the hair trends I noticed at the tents and beyond.

Trend #1 - natural hair products. I know, I know - some of you are probs tired of hearing me preach the gospel of natural everything, but hear me out on this one. I got it straight from a model's mouth -- specifically Arlenis Sosa, who I met during Fashion's Night Out at the Lancome bloggers event. Arlenis was wearing her hair pulled back in a pretty crinkled curly ponytail, and we expressed admiration for each other's do's. Silly me, I assumed because she's from the Dominican Republic, she must use Dominican hair products. Right, but also wrong. "I prefer to try to keep it natural. I love coconut oil, but also tea tree for my hair," she said. Tea tree oil, huh? I'm gonna have to get some and report back to you later!

Trend #2 - Sideswept, pulled back, and asymmetrical. Photo from The Fashion Bomb.

I saw lots of this kind of style at the Arise African Collective show on Friday night and at Rachel Roy's presentation on Sunday. We're not talking about the late Eighties-early Nineties T-Boz asymmetry, either. To get the look yourself without pulling a Cassie or Lala and shaving part of your hair off, make a deep side part, and tuck most your hair behind the opposite ear. Check out this style, seen at Iodice's presentation for example. Or you could rock a side braid over one shoulder, as seen at Alexander Wang's show. Whatever's clever!

Trend #3 - Unfussy, undone, waves, curls, and crimped hair. Seen in this year's shows by Alice & Olivia, Derek Lam, Vivienne Tam, and Narciso Rodriguez -- this look would require you to work with your existing texture if you're a natural bella, or if you've got relaxed hair, bust out your curling or crimping iron. But just know it's not about uniform, obvious coils. Think romantic, hippie influenced hair that somehow looks like you're walking downwind on a beach. Very feminine and pretty.

Trend #4 - The funky up-do. The clothes and makeup at Marc Jacobs was done-to-the-nines fantasy design, but the hair remained accessible and dare I say it? Easily translatable to street fashion. Check out these adorable bantu knots! And the updos held in place with floral garlands. Tres chic. At Tracy Reese it was about a messy pompadour that somehow managed to look sexy, not silly. At Catherine Malandrino it was tribal influenced and complicated. Some models sported turbans, even.

Trend #5 - Ponytails! The watchword this year behind the scenes at SO many shows was "ponytail with a twist." Christian Siriano served them fierce low ponys with waves, DKNY delivered them sleek and flawless. I saw quite a few fashionistas rocking a high side ponytail, but be careful with this look -- you're treading close to Debbie Gibson Electric Youth territory. At Thakoon, key stylist Eugene Souleiman created a "warrior surf" look with Wella Professional Supermousse and Wella High Hair Ocean Spritz to create a textured pony with flava.

Trend #6 (my least fave) - Lots. Of. Product! Grease (and gel) was the word at some of these shows - I heard a whole bottle of gel per model was the method at some shows. At Jeremy Laing, key stylist Marco Santini used Davines products to create hair that captured: "that moment when you dunk your head back in the pool and then come right up. We rolled under the back of the hair creating the shape of a biker's helmet." That required moulding foam, hard gel, and defining gloss. Goopy, heavily tamed hair was also the word at Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Rad Hourani, rag & bone, and Cushnie et Ochs.

What's your favorite New York Fashion Week hair trend? Which would you most likely wear?
