Someone asked me this question recently and it took me some serious thought to come up with an answer. Why? Because when I started Afrobella.com, I signed on to try out and review just about every hair product that came my way.
Having said that, I must admit that I don't recommend this strategy to anyone.
I miss having a fixed regimen of hair products that I stick to, and switching products on a weekly basis can create buildup which leads to scalp flaking. In my experience, the products that work the best are those without bad-for-you hair ingredients like alcohol, mineral oil and petrolatum, and SLS.
The sad thing is, if you look at the ingredients on the back of just about any cosmetics product, that's what they're probably made of.
Here's the routine that works for me, and the products I turn to whenever my hair's all gunked up and stressing me out.
I try to preserve my hair's natural oils by not shampooing too often. I more or less follow the "no-poo" method outlined by Lorraine Massey in her book Curly Girl.
I shampoo no more than once a week, sometimes I go even longer than that. Whenever my hair's feeling dirty and my scalp's got buildup, I turn to a clarifying shampoo. I love Hair Rules Aloe Grapefruit Clarifying Shampoo, No Poo by DevaCurl, and most recently I tried the clarifying mineral shampoo by The Mineral Owl - it smells delicious and worked great. In general, clear shampoos work well for clarifying hair, and doing a very diluted apple cider vinegar rinse every two weeks or so helps to keep my scalp flake free.
Once or twice a week I use conditioner to cleanse and detangle my hair. My current go-to daily conditioner is super cheap and super good -- Trader Joe's Nourish conditioner. It costs like $3 a bottle, and the ingredients are healthy, and to boost the moisturizing power I sometimes add organic coconut oil or olive oil to the mix.
My hair is constantly thirsty, so every weekend I deep condition it. I sincerely LOVE Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment but since it's so insanely expensive, I do my deep conditioning treatment with oils. Mix some organic coconut oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil in a bowl, slather it all over my hair, pull on a heat cap and let it marinate. Another deep conditioner fave o' mine is Miss Jessie's Rapid Recovery Treatment .
For styling, I'm a very easy breezy kind of bella and generally wear my hair in a wash n' go style. My current favorite products are Moroccan Oil (which smells divine but isn't heavy enough to weigh my hair down), Curls Gel-les'c, and Cantu Grow Strong Strengthening Treatment.
For those extra extra dry tumbleweed days, I turn to Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercream and Carol's Daughter Hair Balm.
Slick some product on, let it dry, and I'm out the door! ** oh, and in this particular photo, my hair's pulled up with Tomoka's Twists!

Thank you. I've been natural since last Fall and still haven't found the right products or the right routine for my hair. I get frustrated with it but ultimately wouldn't trade my natural for relaxed ever again. Thanks so much for the suggestions!

I LOVE the article. I'm writing notes as we speak. My #1 hair issue is dry hair! As my hair gets longer I've noticed that it tangles like CRAZY too. So I've started using Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme and Rapid Recovery treatment and LOVE it. However, my budget is getting kind of tight so I played with my own at home ingredients and now use raw shea butter, heat up some water, add a little olive oil and stir and it works great.

Btw, I LOVE your hair! Did you color your hair? If so, did you notice extra dryness after doing so? I'd love to switch it up with a little color, but I'm afraid that it may damage my hair. Have you ever used henna to color your hair?

I love your HAIR! I had my stages of going through many hair products. My hair will grow, but sometimes using a new product will get it off track, or going to different hair salons/stylists with affect it too. What I learn to do, is stay with the same products and regiman, if possible. Only change up if your hair starts have an adverse reaction. Also, use the products exactly as directed or for it's purpose. If your hair becomes dry, damaged or breaks, use product for damaged hair or strengthening, but don't over use it. When the hair gets healthier, you can go back to the regular regiman. Frequent product changing, excessive or lack of proper use, will cause your hair to go "product shock" or withdrawls. Keep it simple is best. The ingredients that work best for my hair is keratin, protein, aloe vera, carrot and jojaba oils. Oils keep my hair from drying out, best to put on damp first then let dry. I shampoo and co wash once a week ea. Keeps my hair strong

I got tired of dealing with hair. In my 50th year I had it all cut off (from just below the shoulder) and now I go to the barber every 3-4 weeks for a trim and shapeup. It's quicker than the beautician, less money, a much better cut and he doesn't get ticked off because I don't want my appoinment to be a social event, or because I don't want to my hair color (I'm silver), or buy over-priced products or to discuss my personal life. And he is on time!!
I wash/rinse almost everyday, depending on whether or not I went to the gym. I use Pantene products for silver hair and they work just fine. I don't spend a lot of time obsessed about the weather (I don't care if it rains)and I can swim if I want.
I wish I had cut it 20 years sooner; it would have saved me untold aggravation.

I think I've been natural for about 15 years. I will never do relaxer again. I love the look and feel of my natural curls. I just get highlights once a year and get a trim every 6-8 months.
I love Jane Carter's products for my natural hair. You can get Jane's products from Whole Foods and her website www.janecartersolution.com. I'm in love with her Nourishing Shampoo, Nutrient Replenishing conditioner and Wrap and Roll. Her products don't make your hair flake or wear it down. And they're made with all natural ingredients.
