Has your hair been looking a little "blah" lately? Does it seem like, no matter what products you use, you just can't seem to make your hair look silky and shiny? You might be suffering from product build-up! Here are a few signs that you might need to do a clarifying treatment:
1. Your shampoo will not lather
2. Your hair will not hold a curl or style for more than a day or two
3. Your hair looks dull, dry and lackluster
4. Your scalp is dry, itchy and flaky
5. Your hair feels "coated" or "gummy".
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, a good clarifying shampoo might help. I clarify at least once a month to get rid of any product residue and keep my hair shiny and strong.I would recommend Nexxus Aloe Rid, Kenra Chelating and Keracare First Lather shampoos. Just make sure to follow the clarifying shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to prevent your hair from feeling dry or stripped.
You can also add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water and use as a final rinse. Just shampoo and condition as usual. Then, pour the vinegar mixture over the hair. Rinse well with cool water. This will remove any buildup or product residue from the hair and will help seal the cuticle, creating long-lasting shine and bounce.
I hope this was helpful! For more tips and techniques, you can find me at www.healthytextures.com.

Most blacks do not relize that there hair build up because you don't have to shampoo as often as caucasians. They jump from one product to another because that is good for the hair, instead of reading the direction they go on another person word. Get shampoo that clean the hair of all gup you have use the week, every two weeks or month. Use a shampoo to clean the hair and one to put the protein back, which will be healthy and shine also you will be able to hold a curl. Do not use a harsh relaxer or to much heat on hair.

What about "build-up" on colored/permed hair?
Are there products that'll clean hair but won't strip color?

You do not have to worry about build-up if hair is relaxed! When that relaxer is rinsed from the hair, the water does run down the hair and all product is stripped right off. The ph of the water and relaxer mixed is high enough to remove most build-up.
