So, we know that excessive heat and chemical processing can lead to dryness, breakage and unnecessary shedding. But, some of the little things we do each and every day can also slowly damage our hair. Check out three of the lesser-known causes of hair damage below.Elastic Bands and Hair Accessories
Elastic bands with metal clasps, jeweled barrettes and butterfly clips can pull and snag on our hair daily. To prevent unnecessary breakage, try Goody Ouchless elastic bands for ponytails and updos. If using a barrette or clip, secure the style with an elastic band and pins before adding the ornament as the clips are more likely to snag free-flowing, unsecured hair.

Indoor Heat
The indoor heat is incredibly drying to the hair and scalp. To counteract this effect, try to incorporate hot oil treatments once a week during the winter to keep the scalp supple and moist. Or, sleep with a small humidifier (or even a large bowl of water) by the bedside at night to add moisture to the air.
Rings and Bracelets
Bracelets, engagement and wedding rings can also pull out our hair strand by strand. If you have a tendency to twirl or flip your hair each day, try to keep the side you typically twirl pinned up (in a side bun or ponytail). This will protect the hair and gradually help you break the habit.
I hope this helps! For more tips and techniques, check me out at www.healthytextures.com.

The conversation WAS about hair until someone saw fit to point out what they perceived to be language usage errors and included unnecessarily rude statements at the end of their self proclaimed rant such as: "i hope they are not paying you" and a brand new word - excusola.

I second the advice that Sherry gave about wearing one's own hair in braids for maximum growth. For over a year I too have been wearing my own hair without weave normally in straight back braids. Granted its not the most sexiest hair style, but my hair is now in the middle of my back. I'll keep the braids in for about a month tending to my scalp and my ends with natural oils that I mix together. I wrap it in a silk scarf at night before I sleep. When I undo the braids I wash and deep condition and have the braids redone. I actually had got the idea from looking at the guys around my way and how their hair was so healthy when they would take out their braids to get their shape up and hair redone. This one in particular would be riding a 4 wheeler in the summertime with hair that look like a lions mane flowing behind him. And when I got up the nerve to ask him about his hair, the above is what he told me and it made sense. The less you do and the least amount of chemicals that you apply to your hair it would seem the more it grows, without breakage, so your able to see the growth.

I agree on the advice Sherry gave about letting your hair rest. I alternate between having my hair naturally twisted and getting presses. I've decided to go all the way natural soon. Just in the little time I have my hair down getting it pressed, I notice how it gets dried out. It's healthier the longer I let it rest.

Please help! One question, I currently have cornrows that I just got put in 5 days ago. How long should I wait until I take them out so it actually LOOKS like it grew? Is it true that if you leave them in for too long that your hair breaks? Will my hair grow at least an inch longer if I leave it on for a tremendous amount of time? E-Mail for me answers at jjjekwue@aol.com. Thank you for all your help!

It's said that Tracee Ellis Ross's hair is naturally curly, but, she's half white and half black, and that's why her hair is that texture. Regarding grammer, please we all are going to lose proper grammer anyway because of e-mail and text messaging, and why are you all so anal about it anyway? We're not in a classroom where it may count, pls. stop hating on every little tiny thing, darn!
