Wassup Hair Lovers!!
As it heats up slowly here in NYC, sistas are unleashing their inner diva via great personal style and even greater--- fun hairdos!

So while taking in the sun and the scene, I took notice of the many ways that sistas were rocking their natural hair.
Outside of her beautifully cropped free curl fro, this young woman's leopard jumpsuit also caught my eye; in between shots I learned that she was an emerging designer who was seeking inspiration among the crowd.
Speaking of "crowd inspiration." Let me just take a moment to dish about the yumminess of Union Square.
FYI: The yummy factor has to be high in order for me to find great subjects to shoot.
For those of you not living in New York City, let me tell you that Union Square is the cool, hip, young, bohemian non-flashy though just as crowded version of Times Square, minus the tourist. Many of the divas that I spotted were hanging out on the "yard" right near the park surrounded by an organic farmers market, a Diesel store and a variety of artists, designers and musicians selling their wares. A lovely epic center, folks..defo get yourself down to the Square the next time you are in NYC.
Back to the hair.
As we all know our hair textures, curl patterns and lengths will vary according to ethnic make-up, genetics, product usage and personal mainatance.
This bride-to-be's naturally, soft abundant curls are proof of the variety of natural textures we share; I'm also diggin' her t-shirt, aren't you?
Sevy, another fabulous emerging designer and a good friend who I wasn't expecting to see, but wasn't surprised to find, was also chillin' in the Square. Her fro features trimmed sides with a higher top; take style note of the mod shades, the layered scarves and the divalicious swagger!

The last natural diva I caught up with, was hanging out with dudes with equally fun hair (but that's another blog post). When I asked her how she maintained her natural hair, she mentioned that she blew it straight-to-wavy on a daily basis alongside using a leave-in conditioner. I love the fullness and the length of her hair alongside the brightness of her cardigan and retro shades.
Until next time...keep it shiny!!!!

My hair is currently relaxed and I was considering growing out my relaxer because I heard that hair is strongest when it is natural. My hair is shoulder length and I want it to be as long if not longer, but natural. What is the best way to go about doing this? Should I cut it all off or let it grow out and every few weeks trim off some of the permed hair?
P.S. I'm scared ti death of going bald or looking terrible with short hair. I've never had my hair cut except for routine trims.

I'm sure you swill look great with short hair. I've been wearing my hair natural for 10 years. You must do what's best for you.
If you are uncomfortable with shaving your hair off (I think it's best to start from scratch). Grow your perm out for a few months, and get the perm cut out then. The only problem with that is you will be dealing with 2 different textures of hair.

Though I'm not a hairstyle expert; whenever you want to natural and don't want to lose length-braids are the way to go. My thoughts are chop quite a bit of it off and replace that length with braids; as new growth comes in, chop off the perm hair.
Another option is to wet your own hair with a bit of oil, braid it and then unbraid it in the morning, which will give you a crimped, wild girl look.
Just my thoughts you can also ask our other hair blogger who gives tons of hair tips.

Those females and their natural hair are beautiful. Being unnatural is like having plastic breasts. Who wants them?

when I decided to go natural I just chopped off my relaxer to have the freedom of wearing it short and curly. However if you are hooked on the length and the patience you could braid and unplait in the morning using a leave in conditioner. I would recommend avoiding extensions if possible. Then every 8-12 weeks trim.

Thanks for the advice. I actually do have braids in my hair now. Since my last perm I've had a sew-in and then I got the braids. Hopefully this works.

Absolutely!!! I went natural 4 years ago and I used micro-braids to grow my hair out. I didn't chop off my permed hair right away. I decided to wait until I had a substantial amount of new growth from the braids and then I cut off my permed hair. I wish I you could post pictures on this board, because my hair is the healthiest it's ever been. Its so versatile! I can rock a afro, waves or press it straight and wrap it.
I LOVE IT and I love seeing other black women embracing themselves for what they are. Whether you have kinky, wavy, or curly hair...it's part of what makes Black People so unique! It's beautiful
P.S. I'LL NEVER GO BACK TO RELAXERS AND CHEMICALS

I went nautal 1.5 years ago and I too did the braids first then cut it all off. I would grease my scalp with a lot of 'going ohm' products and they have worked pretty well for me. Especially in growing back my edges that I lost from wearing so much weave in my permed days! lol if you go to www.goingohm.com you can look at some of the products.
