Can you imagine walking through a lofty, high-tech warehouse with brick walls, earthy tones, incredibly high ceilings and track lighting? This futuristic, ultra modern space with all four natural elements describes the new home of Khamit Kinks -- Hair Apparent's Salon of the Month. Khamit Kinks is the premier natural hair care salon, located in the thriving borough of Brooklyn, New York. Originally founded in a Brooklyn brownstone in 1989, Khamit Kinks moved to Tribeca, NYC in 1996 and has since completed a circular journey by returning to its roots-- contributing to Brooklyn's cultural and commercial renaissance.
Find out more about salon owner, Anu Prestonia and Khamit Kinks' hair philosophy.

Do you remember the infamous GODDESS and TRINI Braids from the 90's. The Afro Bush, Baby Bush and unique natural stylized bridal designs are the signature creations of innovator, Anu Prestonia, founder and owner of Khamit Kinks. The salon boast a celebrity clientele of who's who, including Stevie Wonder, Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, Lenny Kravitz, Queen Latifah and many others. Khamit Kinks' regal styles have also graced the pages of Essence and many beauty and fashion magazines. Ms. Prestonia paved the way and introduced several popular styles to African American culture, such as, Casamas Braids, Senegalese Twist and thread wrapping -- all styles originating in the motherland, Africa.
The salon has a diverse clientele and offers women of color, innovative styles incorporated with cultural heritage. It also provides quality services and continues to set the trends that all others follow. Anu, a natural hair care pioneer in her own right shares her philosophy with Hair Apparent.
HA: What is your Hair Philosophy?
Anu: My hair philosophy and the philosophy of the salon is -- it is essential to have a regimen that encourages and maintains a healthy head of hair, no matter what the style. Your hair always looks better if you start out with a healthy head of hair and the style of choice should forster hair growth. So after you remove the braids or weaves, your hair should continue to grow thicker and healthier.
Many clients mistakenly believe that if they wear locs, weaves or extensions, there is no need to care for their own hair. Every so often, each client should make the time and investment in receiving deep conditioning treatments for both their hair and scalp.
HA: You constantly change your hair styles. What is your current style and what are Khamit Kinks' signature styles?
Anu: Right now, I am wearing Sister Locks, which I have worn for a few years now. This is my third set of locks. Since I have dyed the tips of my Sister Locks with a vibrant turquoise color, admirers often approach me. Khamit Kinks' signature styles right now are the Baby Curl Twist, Cola Weaves, Swing Braids and Stylized Locks.
HA: What are the more popular styles that your clients are requesting?
Anu: The Baby Curl, which is a two-strand twisted style using textured extensions, is by far our most requested hair style. The Baby Curl hairstyle tends to be costly, since human hair is required. Consequently, we have developed an alternative version using a less expensive hair, which we call the Gypsy Twist.
HA: What products do you highly recommend for your clients?

Anu: Of course, we highly recommend our signature Khamit Kinks hair oils. These oils are formulated by yours truly, using top quality natural ingredients. We also highly recommend Jane Carter Solution products, as well as, the Indigo line of products.
HA: What essential tips can you offer for our braided and locked sistas for maintaining healthy hair?
Anu: One of our essential tips for maintaining healthy hair is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Our hair tends to be dry. This is especially true during the fall and winter months when the air is exceptionally dry. Since we all tend to hibernate a little more during the cold season, it's a great time to treat ones self to the moisturizing treatments offered at their favorite salon. For those wearing locks this is a must! Also, I would like to recommend for those with locks and weaves to have their hair serviced more often to cut down on the rancid and sour smells that are often times associated with these styles.
HA: How does Khamit Kinks stand out from other salons?
Anu: We at Khamit Kinks have a high level of respect and regard for our clients. We believe what makes us stand out is the superior customer service we offer our clients. We are open and receptive to their needs and concerns and we do our best to have them leave the salon with a glowing smile on their faces.

Khamit Kinks....exceptional service to say the least. I have been a client at Khamit Kinks since March 2006. The staff are very professional and mature. As soon as you walk into the salon you feel pampered, and your hair is treated with the UPMOST respect!
I find people to be envious of of my hair...that's okay...If they ask, I tell them I get my hair done in the best darn natural hair salon in NY....

I just so happened to stumble across this blog and felt compelled to share the telephone experience I recently had with a K.K. employee, in hopes that the proprietress will read this and address the issue accordingly. For years I have been in awe of Khamit Kink's innovative hair styles which I would see in various braid magazines... libing in rural Ohio, I always wished I could one day visit the shop and get one of those snazzy looking natural do's. So when I was surfing for natural hair extensions, I was ecstatic to see that the company now sells hair to the general public. I immediately placed an order online and called the shop about a week thereafter for additional product information as well as to check on the status of my order. I was looking forward to being greeted by a friendly voice eager to share their knowledge of the products/services they sell. Instead, the individual I spoke with was very impatient and treated me rudely. And I got very little information on the product I was inquiring about. If this person was a receptionist, then she needs some intensive customer service training. If she is a stylist, I would never allow some one with such a negative demeanor to braid, twist or loc those negative vibes into my hair.
Good customer service, on all levels, is the foundation of a thriving business.

Oh well, I'll start by saying that, generally speaking, my experiences with the people, and the styles at Khamit Kinks were just fine. Only once did I have a problem, and that was with the tightness of the braids; however, I don't particularly think that "too tigh" braids is uniquely a Khamit Kinks problem, I think in general, black hair establishments, i.e, the staff, really do not know about African American "kinky" hair. I still hear phrases like "good hair" and "tender headed" and "grease the scalp"...all wrong. But...having said that, I like Khamit more than I dislike them, but I have not visited the Brooklyn location as Manhattan works better for me. I think the cost is too high for the quality of service, but I don't think they should undercharge for their skills either... So basically, I think the service is ok, and everyone has always been nice and professional to me. My last visit was in May 2005. Also, I don't know if its still the case, but at least two or more of the styles listed are on the website are not done by anyone in the salon.

I first went to Khamit Kinks when they were in Manhattan, and I was happy to finally experience fast, professional service in a CLEAN environment. I have now visited them a few times in Brooklyn and they continue to deliver the best service available. They have kept my appointments, and always worked with me if I had to reschedule. They have accommodated me at the last minute, and even once slotted me in when I walked in one afternoon with a "hair crisis". As far as I am concerned, they are the best at what they do. I can only speak for my own experience, and to me the salon is clean, modern, beautiful and relaxing; the stylists are professional and friendly. Only rave reviews here. Sure, they're expensive, but anytime I have "strayed" I have regretted it, as they deliver the best look and results for my hair. You get what you pay for.

I was at a client at Khamit Kinks for several years, and I liked the staff (although I can agree that a few of them are not as professional as one might expect for the prices there). My problem is that my hairline is broken off, the coloring they put in my hair was not consistent (so I have stripes of color) and the ends were severely damaged requiring me to have to cut off a large chunk of it. A lot of this could have been avoided if Anu put a system in place to keep track of such things and also is she were actually there to supervise what happens in her salon. It would also help if she worked on her people skills (When I walked into the salon the first time she said, "Don't I know you? Don't you have a white husband?") I wasted three years of my life and thousands of dollars to end up right where I started. I'm done with Khamit Kinks.

Congrats to Khamit Kinks on this profile, as they are truly the best! Anu Prestonia and her expert staff presented the most fabulous '70s themed hair and fashion show recently at the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival. Our honoree, Irene Cara, was highly impressed and entertained, as were we all.

Hello Anu, I wanted to congratulate you on all your success. You may not remember me, but I was in a video for your shop that was taped here in Pittsburgh and I came to your shop in New York to get my Locks twisted back in 1998. I know that you will continue to be the best in your field. Keep it up and god bless.
